What is the value ratio of 1 sec product placement to 30 sec commercial?
People would rather see product placement over ads. Which seems like an obvious statement but if you think about it, it makes a great case of branded content and advertainment. You’d think people would get fired up about the “subliminal” messaging and compromise of art but it seems when it’s done well, for good reason, and doesn’t disrupt the flow of a show, people don’t mind. It’s better than a commercial break.
Maybe that’s what the future looks like… Maybe Hollywood and Madison Ave will unite into one and the way tv shows are produced, written, and made will all be different. Instead of commercials and ad agencies we’ll have branded content and product placement/advertainment shop.
I could have an agency called XZY and represent a range of feminine products. I could then coproduce miniseries, or TV series along with other agencies representing other products that also fund the show. No commercials, just a tv show. This would only work if egos from client/agency side weren’t too big and were willing to put the art first to tell a compelling story.
My thoughts are scrambled right now but I think that’s where the future lies.
